Director of Development- Chattanooga Area Food Bank

The Chattanooga Area Food Bank (CAFB) is seeking a seasoned team-oriented leader with a proven fundraising background to help carry forward its mission to lead a network of partners in eliminating hunger and promoting better nutrition.

Working with the president & CEO, the Director of Development will be responsible for creating and implementing the development strategy for the CAFB. Reporting to the President, the Director of Development is primarily responsible for supporting the CAFB in carrying out its mission by securing the optimal level of monetary and in-kind support, as well as by facilitating the necessary level of community engagement to foster those two sources of support. This is an exciting opportunity for a fundraising professional to strengthen the development program of a well-respected, high-impact organization.

This is NOT an entry level position.

Job Responsibilities

The Director of Development is responsible for coordinating and overseeing comprehensive fundraising efforts to achieve the annual development goals and cultivating strong and lasting relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporate partners, volunteers and other constituents. A primary focus of the next 12-18 months will be to implement major gifts and corporate giving programs. More specifically, the Director of Development has the primary responsibilities to:

 Lead and manage the organization’s overall development strategy to raise $3.7million dollars through fundraising;

 Supervise and lead development department staff to support fundraising and community engagement efforts;

 Implement both a major donor and corporate giving program, including special category solicitations/support materials with the intent to retain or upgrade gifts;

 Work closely with CAFB’s Development Manager to identify corporate, foundation and government grant opportunities; oversee the development of all grant applications;

 Work closely with CAFB’s Community Relations Event Manager and committees to ensure the success of CAFB special events and food drives and third party events on behalf of the CAFB, including attendance when appropriate;

 Work closely with CAFB’s Development Manager to oversee the relationship with direct mail consultant to ensure successful implementation of the program;

 Work with CAFB’s Director of Communications & Healthcare Partnerships to implement comprehensive marketing and public relations strategy which support new and existing fundraising efforts (i.e. annual report, presentations, speeches, etc.);

 Work closely with CAFB CEO to strengthen and support Board fundraising capacity;

 Cultivate and recognize donors by producing specialized correspondences, scheduling and attending in-person visits, and supervising staff engaged in maintaining donor database;

 Work with Community Engagement Committee to develop and implement annual community engagement plan;

 Other duties as assigned.


 At least 5 years of development, direct sales or business development experience in a service industry or with a nonprofit;

 Knowledge of Direct Mail vendor relationships a plus;

 Proven track record of achieving revenue targets and/or a quota of over $1M annually with an emphasis on major donor development;

 Major gifts experience strongly preferred;

 Grant writing experience strongly preferred;

 Proven management and leadership capabilities;

 High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail; high degree of initiative;

 Excellent verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively ;

 Demonstrated ability to think strategically and a thorough understanding of strategic development ;

 Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new donor relationships;

 Thorough understanding of all components of a diversified funding base;

 Excellent computer skills and knowledge of data base programs;

 Some overnight travel required.
