Curatorial Assistant - The Hunter Museum

Full time, hourly, reports to the Chief Curator

The Hunter Museum is looking for an individual with initiative and a positive attitude to work closely with curatorial staff to support the major functions of collections management and exhibitions. The Curatorial Assistant helps with any aspect of curatorial operations as needed, including administrative tasks, registration and preparatory work and is the department liaison for the Museum’s major fundraiser, Spectrum.  He/She should be a detail oriented individual with strong organizational and communications skills, with the ability to prioritize and shift between tasks quickly. He/She should be able to work independently and also collaborate with other colleagues.

Primary duties:

  • Assists curators with administrative and operational tasks as needed
  • Assists curators with research as needed
  • Works with registrars on long term projects such as collections processing, TMS entry and updates, backlogs, processing of estates
  • Works with preparators on exhibition and gallery installations and deinstallations
  • Helps write, edit, and produce content including checklists, labels, biographic information, press releases, interactive projects and other exhibition related materials
  • Helps design and create internal graphics and signage
  • Manages all Spectrum art selection logistics
  • Department liaison for internal communication with other museum departments
  • Additional duties as assigned

Minimum job requirements

  • BA required
  • 2-3 years of Museum or related experience in a support role
  • Demonstrated interest and knowledge of art, curating, archival or related work
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, work effectively under pressure and follow through with details
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and PCs
  • Experience with Museum Registration software preferred
  • Proficiency with design programs, including InDesign, SketchUp, Google Photos, Adobe Creative Suite preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders
  • Flexibility; will need to work a few evenings and weekends.
