Communication Intern- Venture Forward

POSITION TITLE: Venture Forward Communication Intern

FLSA STATUS: Part-Time/Internship (Unpaid)

DEPARTMENT: Venture Forward

REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Venture Forward

Summary/Objective

Venture Forward, an initiative of United Way of Greater Chattanooga, is seeking a high-energy and motivated intern to assist in the development and implementation of a communication strategy. The Communication Intern will be a self-starter, familiar with social media platforms, creative, and will be a team player. He or she will work closely with and take direction from the Coordinator of the Hub for Social Innovation at United Way. 

Essential Functions:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a social media strategy plan.

  • Assist with streamlining Venture Forward social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.), ensuring uniform content, tone and language.

  • Increase the number of followers on all social platforms by following and engaging with community members and nonprofit agencies.

  • Post Tweets daily (both job- and industry-related)

  • Post updates to the Venture Forward LinkedIn account. Use LinkedIn polls and surveys to build VF social media footprint and reputation.

  • Post updates to the Venture Forward Facebook account.

  • Post updates to the Venture Forward Instagram account.

  • Schedule and coordinate a monthly brainstorming meeting to establish content ideas for the month ahead and to plan for a monthly social media calendar.

  • Maintain the monthly social media and blogging calendar, and ensure that everyone is meeting their deadlines.

  • Update the Venture Forward website with content, articles, etc. related to the nonprofit industry.

  • Capture images, videos, etc. during Venture Forward events, workshops and trainings.

Competencies

  • Proven written communication skills, and excellent verbal communications skills and a familiarity with AP style.

  • An interest in nonprofit marketing, communications, social media, etc.

  • Familiarity with key social media tools (e.g. Twitter and Facebook) and with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

  • Excellent attention to detail and a high motivation to learn

  • Photography and videography abilities are a plus

  • Graphic design skills are a plus

  • An ability to prioritize work and complete tasks with quick turnaround times and willingness to ask questions to gain clarity.

  • The ability to work collaboratively with United Way staff and external customers.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. A neat appearance and business attire is required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time position. Days and hours of work are determined between the intern and the Executive Director of Venture Forward.

Required Education and Experience

Enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts degree program with a focus in Marketing, Public Relations, or Communications.
